Welcome to Nhasa's health class! I am so excited to be working with you all this year in this online manner! Please be sure to check out the class syllabus and timeline for what we will be covering and how grading will be done. You can reach me at either of my emails during the day: my contact information is to the right of the blog.
So, without further ado, here is today's assignment.

The English word "health" comes from the Old English word hale, meaning "wholeness, a being whole, sound or well,". What do you think health is? Can you break it up into different parts?

1. Write a blog entry with your definition of "health". Please explain your thinking. In your entry, explain what it means to be "in good health". Please do this without using any online dictionaries or resources. I want to know where you are starting in your thinking for this course.

2. If there was a "healthy scale", 10 being super healthy and 1 being extremely unhealthy, where would you place yourself? Please give explanations and reasons for your score. Tell me where your health "strengths" lie and where you may have some weaknesses or areas to work on.

Remember, this is your first assignment. I would like you to take your time writing your response. Share your thought process, explain and back up your statements, give examples, and really use your brain to think about the questions.

The second part of today's assignment is to go to this link,Kids Health , and browse the site for 10 minutes or so. Write me a second blog with a list of 5 to 10 topics that you are interested in investigating this year in health and nutrition.

  1. I think health means that you exercise well, eat well, sleep well, and you don't hurt your body. I think its very important for exercise because it helps your weight. I also thinks it's healthy to eat well because you don't want to get over weight or have anything go wrong with your blood flow. It could also effect your heart. Sleeping well is also very important because not enough rest can hurt your head, body, and strength.

On a scale of 1-10, I think I am about a 7. I think I am a 7 because sometimes I don't sleep very well and sometimes I eat a lot of junk food. But I have a feeling that I am getting better already.

I think that my strengths are around exercising and sleeping. Sometimes I don't sleep well, but I mostly do. My weakness is around eating probably. Like, I do eat healthy food, but sometimes I would get home from gym and I would just snack on junk food. But as I said before, I think I'm getting better already because I haven't had a lot of junk lately. I actually only snack if I'm bored. And I usually am bored.

  2. Question 1: What is health? What does it mean to be "in good health?"

My belife is that "health" is a topic that explains ones state. Meaning, that "health" can describe how one's physical state is, and mental state. To be "in good health" means different things for the physical state vs. the mental state. If a person has a healthy physical state, then I belive that, that person has these different things: They eat things that help their body, they sleep enough hours a night to rest and replenish their body, and they exersize to keep their body strong. If a person has a healthy mental state, then I belive that, that person has these different things: They respect themselves as a person and they make decisions that they belive is right and not what another person thinks is right weather it be about eating the right food and the nutrision part or weather it be about voteing and the political aspect of health. They respect other people as well by being nice to them and respecting their decision. With these definisions, I think that one must do more than just one thing to be healthy, like just eating right or just exercising. Everything works together. One has to eat rite AND excersize or respect themselves AND others. I belive that health works as a system and that system includes the physical AND mental aspect of it.

  3. The website, Kids Health, was okay. I didn't like it very much. I wish there were more games to play online. Like crossword puzzles or stuff like that. That would be cool(:

  4. Question 2: If there was a "healthy scale", 10 being super healthy and 1 being extremely unhealthy, where would you place yourself? Where are your strangths and where are you weeknesses?

I would probably give myself a 7. I do a lot of good healthy things like work out and eat good. However, somethings that I do are not very healthy, for example: A lot of my weeknesses lye in my sleeping. I am usually kind of tired during the day, and I don't get to bed until late. I eat pretty well, but I do snack a lot at night. My strangths are surtainly in working out and knowing what is and what isn't healthy for me to eat.

  5. I believe the word health describes how someone is feeling whether it is laying at home sick or out enjoying the day. There are two different types of health, there is BAD HEALTH and GOOD HEALTH. Bad health meaning sick and tired, good health means taking care of your body, getting enough sleep and exercise, and eating well.

  6. I would consider myself a 8, I do a lot of healthy activities and I do not get sick very often. I eat pretty well and get to bed pretty early but I can still be kind of tired during the day. I feel that I get a lot of exercise with my sports but I sometimes get tired early in the day. I feel I need to eat more things that will give me lasting energy. I should cut back on the sugar I have a bit of a sweet tooth.

  10. My lowest were musice and Mathamatics, then Linguistic, after that it was Natarualistic, then it was Intrapersonal, then it said Visual/Spatial and then it was Body/Kinesthetic, then Music.

It would help me in school on the subjects that I'm strong on, and it would make it difficult for me in the subjects I had a lower score in.

I was only surprised when Mathamatics was lower because I'm usally good at math.

  18. 1. How might this makeup of learners influence the learning environment in this health class? Looking at your own high scores, what types of activities might best help you learn concepts in this health class? If I am working with a very motivated group I will excel more than working with kids that aren’t motivated at all. I learn well with workbooks, pictures and I always try to make the work fun.
    2. Thinking about the areas where you might have scored lower, what are some strategies that you can come up with when you might have to do work in those types of areas? I scored low in music, I think this is because I do not sing much, it is also hard for me to remember the lyrics to songs that my friends can.
    3. Many people have discussed the possibility of a new type of learner, an "electronic" or "tech" learner, due to the many advances in technology over the past ten years. What is your reaction to this possible type of learner? What characteristics might this type of learner have? Do you think this is one of your strengths? I think learning on the computer is hard because it is just like starring at a picture, I would rather learn in a book or something where I could move through it.
