Hello Health Students!
Here is your exam.  This is an "open Book" exam, meaning you may use any resources you want to complete this test. This may include your notes, internet etc.  You do, however, need to work on your own. Make sure you ask Scott if you are unsure about any of the questions or directions.

We  spent a lot of time at the beginning of our year learning about the digestive system and nutritional needs.
  1. Describe what a healthy diet would look like for someone your age with your physical activity. Be sure to explain what foods or food groups should be included and why they would be important

We also looked at how the body is organized and how the different systems work together.
2. Explain how the following systems connect to each other and work together:
respiratory system and circulatory system
digestive system and excretory system

We looked at cardiovascular health as well over the last few months.
3.  Compare and contrast the following terms( in other words, show how they are the same/different and if they have anything to do with each other: hypertension, atherosclerosis, heart attack, stroke

Lastly, we looked at smoking and advertising.
4.  Choice A.   Compose a short letter to a cigarette company to convince them to change their marketing strategies for their cigarettes

Choice B Compose a letter to a friend to convince them to quit smoking.
Make sure you use as many reasons why and back your reasons/arguments up as best you can.  Make an airtight case..........

Mid-Year Exam Information

Hi Health Students!

So, the time for Mid-Year Exam is upon us.  Here is how you can prepare for the health exam:

1.  Go over all your notes and assignments and make sure you have them saved in an accessible place.
2.  Review how to write an essay and short answers.

Your exam will be entirely essay or short answer questions.  Please do not work on memorizing information, I am not going to ask you the parts of the respiratory system!  I am going to ask you questions that will get you thinking about what we have done so far in the year.  To do your best job, you will need to explain yourself fully and give examples when neccessary.  It will help you greatly if you have your work and assignments to refer back to.

Get good rest and eat healthy foods especially during exam week.  Exams can be stressful, so be sure to rest, eat properly and get outside and get some fresh air to keep your head clear!!!!
Email me if you have any questions!

Happy New Year Health Nuts!
I hope you all had wonderful vacations.  I did, and it is hard to get back into the swing of things.  One of my goals this new year is to try and be better at communicating with you all about assignments and grades.
I now have a folder for each of you into which all of your emails will go.  You all should have recieved at least one email regarding assignments, grades and any missing work.  If you did not, please email me and let me know.  It is important that assignments get completed before the next classes it allows me to better plan the ongoing classes and assignments.  If you have any missing work, please get it in to me by the end of the week.

1.  Today I would like you to go on to brainpop and watch the short movie on smoking.  This is just an introduction.  http://www.brainpop.com/health/personalhealth/smoking/

2.  After watching the movie, please take the quiz and see how you do.

3. I would then like you to go on to the FYI section after the movie and read and print out or copy and paste the information for you to access at a later date.

4.  Then, make a t chart or two lists that show short term effects of smoking and long term effects of smoking.

5.  Commericals for cigarettes  are not allowed on television.  Why do you think this is?  Is this fair?  What is your opinion on this?

6.  Where do we see commercials for smoking?  Over the next few days, keep your eye out and collect at least one ad for cigarettes and bring it in to class for Thursday.

So, let me summarize what you should be sending me........
your chart/lists of short and long term effects of smoking, and your thoughts on cigarette advertising. ( please write more than a sentence.....I am looking for a short essay type answer)
If you have time, do a little research on second-hand smoke....what is this?  What effect can it have?  Record your discoveries for next class.......
Happy Investigating!
